eBay Credit Card Organic Social Campaign

CONCEPT: eBay wanted to put out organic social media posts to promote the new eBay Mastercard.

CHALLENGES:

  • Messaging hierarchy

    • In the brief, this campaign was supposed to talk about earning points with the credit card, how you can shop with your points on eBay, and promote an offer to get a $50 statement credit.

  • Legal guidelines

    • There are strict rules for what we can and cannot say when promoting a credit card.

  • Audience

    • These are organic social media posts and we wanted to market something to our customers without it feeling like “marketing.”

Round 1

I suggested we focus on only one of the credit card’s benefits in this campaign, because if we include all three benefits, it won’t feel organic. My initial pitch was rejected, so I drafted straightforward copy that met marketing’s objectives, but was dull and felt too promotional.

Step-by-step instructions for earning points on eBay credit card: 1. Open a new account before August 15th. 2. Spend $200 or more on eBay within 30 days. 3. Earn a $50 statement credit. Swipe up to learn more.

After reviews, the marketing team decided we could have more creative flexibility. They also allowed us to include lifestyle imagery and GIFs.

Creative solution

A five-panel infographic with light blue background. The first panel shows a smiling red heart with the text 'All you need is love...'. The second panel features a cup of coffee with the text 'coffee...'. The third panel has a cute dog face with the text 'puppies...'. The fourth panel displays a blue eBay credit card with the text '(and a credit card where you can earn up to 5x points'. The fifth panel illustrates a hand swiping a credit card with the text 'Swipe up to learn more.'.
Message that says 'All you need is love...' with a small red heart icon on a light blue background.

Results

A social media analytics report showing engagement metrics, top posts, and Instagram stories featuring various content like coffee, dogs, and eBay credit card ad.

This Instagram story ended up being the highest impression driver for eBay’s organic social media posts, which is rare for a single Instagram story.

Highlighted text in a document that reads: 'Thanks, everyone!! By the way... I showed this content to Suzy the other week and she LOVED it! She wants more CC content to feel this fun. 😊'

Our Chief Marketing Officer loved the campaign and wanted future social media campaigns to be equally as fun.
